An eye-opener Reading "When Ireland Fell Silent" was a real eye-opener to me. I had heard about the blight wiping out the potato crop and how it caused many Irish to emigrate to the United States, but that was about it. I didn't know it was more of a man-made than a natural disaster because the farms provided plenty of food for survival if the farmers had been allowed to keep more of their produce.
