A Deserving Classic It almost seems presumptuous to review a book that is over 50 years old. However, though Irwin Shaw's writing may seem rather moody and shadowed for readers educated in an Internet Age, "The Young Lions" is rightfully considered a classic of 20th Century literature -- and in my view, for good reason. It speaks to the realities of the emotions, motivations and unconsidered acts of common men and wo. Alexander Blaser said War in the frontline. War, not from de point-of-view of General Headquarters, Corps or Army Headquarters or any other HQ far behind the frontline. No history about grand strategies etc. This is war from the perspective of the simple soldier or platoon, in the middle of the frontline, and told in all its crudeness, cruelty, misery, constant fear. How does it feel to be cannon-fodder, to be utterly dispensable, to be jus. Feel what real war is like by reading this book. Arlene Claxton I guess this is what war is like. Soldiers from both sides have a story to tell about training, officers and government screw ups. I hated how the book ended but I suppose that was more of reality. Finally, I am glad I read it. For years I have wondred why we send teenagers or young men barely it f their teens to fight. This book doesn't answer that question.
