Interesting for fans of the movie Having been a fan of the movie (my favorite) I was surprised at how much Frank Nugent added some characters who were not in the book. Some of the classic lines in the movie are verbatim from the book, but sometimes issued by different characters. I will not spoil anything, but there are twists and different emphases in the book as compared to the movie. You will see a different relationship between Ethan (Amos in the novel) and Martin. Fans of the movie should enjoy geeking out as the novel moves along in a slower, darker, and almost humorless way.. "Total Suprise" according to TKH IN THE DEEP SOUTH. Having only seen the movie, this book was a total surprise to me. It was well written. The story keeps you right in the search, never dragging. Smart and Amos were very well developed. Their relationship totally believable. This one has a real feeling to it as " the boy don't always get the girl" .It seems strange now, reading a western where the whites aren't demonized, and the native Americans the good guys. This actually seems it's somewhere in the middle. Maybe that's what makes The Searchers a timeless read.. Amazon Customer said Much better than the movie. A Western of epic proportions without all the movie's hokum. A tale of relentless will overcoming the savagery and desolation of the plains and their ruthless natives, the Comanches.
