In spite of his prejudices, Bud grows to like the spunky girl (and her excellent cooking). The rancher’s daughters are rescued, and the exhausted party turns back. Ambushes and battles with banditos, Rurales, and traitors are constant, and the brutal weather is as much a threat as the man-made perils. He’s unable to find anyone willing to take her. Bud, with twelve other men, pursue the banditos into the most desolate reaches of Mexico. Here, the relationship between the girl and the young cowboy hesitantly grows. The historical detail was also fantastic--never laid on too thick,. Mary Jane Kail said Very good & exciting to the last page. Young Bud Eugen works for Barnabas Scoggins at the Triple-Bar Ranch. Pancho Salagar takes an interest in Bud & teaches him how to track & all the finer points of being a cowboy. For three years things go well until the ranch is among many falling on hard times & as it approaches winter Scoggins finds he must let some of his ranch hands go. He contacts a friend.
