Alfred J. Kwak said Showdown in Albufeira, Portugal in the early 1960s. John Le Carré (JLC)'s and Len Deighton (LD)'s early 1960's spy novels have not aged much in human terms. They deal with (counter-) espionage during the Cold War. The heroes and opponents of both authors sometimes go back to WW II. Re the British-Soviet victory over Hitler Germany, there is even some lingering mutual respect, far more so in LD's books than i. "The spy with no name is back" according to John Dziadecki. and this time heads for deep waters. This was written around the same time as "The Ipcress File". It is well written with enough twists and turns to keep you reading to the end. Sometimes it flounders about but nonetheless keeps its head abover water. "The Ipcress File" and "Funeral in Berlin" have more depth and character development but "Horse Under Water" hold. "Mostly interesting as a contrast to his later and much better works" according to John Bonavia. I've just finished reading Deighton's three trilogies set in the 1980s against a Cold War background. It's very strange to go back now and see what he was writing in the early 1960s. I wonder if he's slightly embarrassed to revisit those earlier books? Certainly the later ones are vastly more mature, but partly that's just a function of the culture which the early
