Sophomoric, jokey dialogue and intrusive author lectures will lead many readers to tire of the whole business long before the evildoer receives his just and expected reward. Griffin fan for the better part of 40 years, even when he was writing as Alec Baldwin. This book was evidently written by his son, William E. Butterworth IV, and just had his (Griffin's) name on it to induce his fans to buy it. It is very disappointing in that the prose is very stilted and not up to Griffin's standards. Many of the better characters from previous books in the "Badge of Honor" series are totally missing or barely mentioned in the book (Mickey O'Hara and Peter Wohl to mention 2). Granted, W.E.B. Griffin has. "Not his best, but still enjoyable" according to Amazon Customer. Another six months and another WEB read. I agree with many of the other readers' remarks. In some ways, the book is light-weight when compared with previous Badge of Honor books. Many characters are missing and the romance seems to have been phoned in. Matt Payne falls in and out of love pretty easily with beautiful women. The novel is somewhat better though when it comes to the characterization and plot line of the villains and minor protagonists. The description of the drug trade and illegal immigration is fascinating and appalling at the. "Good action but less than his best" according to Michael T Kennedy. As another reviewer has pointed out, there are a few errors of continuity. The description of Matt Payne's family is all mixed up. Amy is a half sister and older. Griffin also forgets that, in the last modernized Badge series book, the Philadelphia mayor had been brought up to the present as a black politician. Carlucci is an obvious picture of Frank Rizzo of the 70s but the mayor of "Final Justice" is black. Now, we have an immediate sequel where the mayor is back to Carlucci.
