Crucial that reader understand Kafka's personal history/background, that particular era in Europe, as well as the intellectual influences that shaped Kafka as a young lawyer/writer. Influences include German realism, mysticism, Talmudic structure and logic, and French existentialism. Brilliantly imagined and I. "Strange and difficult" according to Philip S Kruis. This has got to be one of the strangest books I've ever read. Is it a bad dream or is it the angst we all feel over our misdeeds. There were times I wanted to stop reading because it didn't seem to make sense. Now I'm quite sure it is not supposed to make sense. I'm not sure I would recommend this book to anyone a although the writing has a certain sort of genius to it. The book certainly evokes a number of feelings we don't norma. If you love Hesse, you'll love this I read it because it's a classic and I try to read a couple of year. The free Kindle version is not well-edited, which is a bit distracting (but what do you expect for free?). Having read Hesse in my younger days, I should have known what I was getting in early 20th century central European fiction. If you love Hesse, you'll love this. Unfortunately, I don't.

The story loses a bit in translation (and the typeset text looks awkward in the context of Kuper's distinctly handmade drawings). Executed on scratchboard, it's a jittery, woodcut-inspired mass of sharp angles that owes a debt to both Frans Masereel (a Belgian woodcut artist who worked around Kafka's time) and MAD magazine's Will Elder.
