Only a Couple of Decent Stories, the Rest Filllers James N Simpson Like another reviewer, I was surprised that the introduction took up over 100 pages, and with the 100 pages at the end listing people who died. The introduction was a little interesting, especially the part where Stephen Jones gives an honest account of the number of authors who read reviews and defends low ranking reviews of their stories, but I hardly think many people would want that instead of a couple more horror stories. I actually only go. The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 21 [This is an old review, slightly edited for republication here.]This installment of the long-running Best New Horror series contains less fiction than any previous entry, only about 300 pages' worth. The other 180 pages are given over to editor Stephen Jones' summary of the year in horror (100 pages) and Jones and Kim Newman's exhaustive necrology, which takes 80 pages this year to note the death of anyone with even a passing connection to horro. Mammoth Review This is the first Best New Horror collection I have read, and having picked it up directly after reading Darkness: Two Decades of Modern Horror (edited by Ellen Datlow), I was rather disappointed. I’ve been on a horror short story kick, and while I attempted to judge The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror solely on its own merits, it was difficult not to compare the two volumes. While there are some shining moments in this anthology, overall
Stephen Jones is one of Britain’s most acclaimed horror anthologists, and winner of three World Fantasy Awards, four Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker Awards, and three International Horror Guild Awards. He lives in London.
