Steiner is the MAN. Ozark Trail Outrider Unlike so many of his fellow German veterans, Willi Heinrich elected to relate his WWII experiences through his outstanding novel, The Cross of Iron. The book deals with the German withdrawal from the Kuban Peninsula. This is one of the far flung fronts that comparatively little has been written.Heinrich's protagonist is Sgt. Steiner, the veteran platoon leader that has seen more than his share of combat and knows how to achieve an objective and keep his men alive. He is the c. A decent read This is the second novel of Willi Heinrich's that I have read, the first being The Crack of Doom, which I read some 35 years ago. The Cross of Iron I believe is older, having been written in the 1950's, and it shows. His characters and the story's plot are not nearly as well developed. The story is fairly predictable and in many ways is similar to Eric Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front. I believe Mr Heinrich did a much better job with The Crack of Doom. However, . Then I thought the book might be good since the author's division had been mauled in Russia My fault,,I didn't realize I was getting a novel rather then nonfiction. Then I thought the book might be good since the author's division had been mauled in Russia and he had some expertise but he kept making statements like the Russian Tommy gun was better then the German Tommy gun.
