David Currie was a professor of law at the University of Chicago Law School. He wrote several books on the history of the Constitution in American government, and published this primer in 1988. It is essentially a brief survey of Constitutional Law. It is not a book about the historical background to the Constitution. Although the book is 160 pages from front to back, the body of the text, excluding appendices and endnotes, is only 88 pages. Appendix A is a chronology, and appendix B is the Constitution as it stood in 1988, up to the 26th amendment of 1971. The endnotes are references to the cases discussed in the text, along with oc. "Great info--written strangely" according to chris. While " A Primer for the People" is a very informative read, it is bogged down with awkward phrasing and--somewhat unpredictable--punctuation errors. Currie often lists off several clauses but does little to explain them. Other times, his sentences are awkwardly structured--making the book hard to comprehend in some parts. However, the text has several strong points: it is clear Currie had a deep understanding of the Constitution, and the book is filled with several powerful court case examples.Despite these strong points, " A Primer for the People" is an overall tough read.
