excellent horror collection A Customer This twenty-two story horror collection features tales written in 2002 that first appear in this book though some have probably reappeared elsewhere. The tales run the gamut of horror from the supernatural to the psychological to the suspense and include several of the who's who of the genre like Douglas Clegg, Bentley Little, and Graham Masterson. As stated the contributions encompass much of the genre as Richard Chizmar must have provided the authors with one apparent instruction to entertain the readers, which they do as no tale is bad and with some like those of Little, Brian . Great short stories from excellent authors This is an excellent collection of horror stories. There is no pattern or common thread to them other than being scary and well written. Some like "The Sailor Home from the Sea" are almost old-school in style but all of them deliver in the punch. And the article/journal by Kelly Laymon about Keene Con (a multi-day party thrown by Brian Keene) gives a fun view of some of the humor horror novelists have. For you completists out there, "Tender Tigers" by Nancy Collins is a Sonja Blue story. Almost every single story was a big hit with me and it was hard picking out my top ones to lis. Not Free SF Reader average A pretty average original horror anthology, in general, with a few good stories - Nancy Collins' Sonja Blue tale, Monteleone's old school nasty bet story and Simon Clark's short and savage take on the Hand of Glory.Otherwise, the average here is only 3.25. There is nothing else in this book but a copyright page and a paragraph about the editor, so that is a bit on the lame side, leaving you completely unenlightened as to its origin, other than who published it.So, this book is basically a very solid three.Shivers : Fodder - Brian Keene and Tim LebbonShivers : Ice Box - Jay Bonansi
And like a periodical, this anthology seems more a snapshot of the genre at a given moment than an enduring monument. Nevertheless, the diversity of contents and writing talents ensures something to suit each horror reader's tastes. The book's lack of a specific thematic focus gives writers a chance to explore a variety of topics and approaches, ranging from John Pelan's "The Sailor Home from the Sea," a work steeped in the classic ghost story tradition, to Simon Clark's "The Hand of Glory," which effectively imports a classic horror theme into an incongruous contemporary setting.
