At his best This is a wonderful story. One of the best features of this book is the majestic descriptions of the area. Desolate but magnificent. I felt I could see it and feel it even though L'Amour's writing style is spare. The clash of the Indian culture against the European invaders is a powerful backdrop to the main story and offers their nobility and strength as well as the tragedy of the struggling people who could not and would not win in the end. The tribute offered to the Indian enemy was chilling. There is a lot of action with bot. Solid western from Louis L'Amour Ironmike For a change of pace, I thought I'd go back to read some westerns. Where better than old Louie L'Amour's vast collection of works. This title was fast paced, lots of action, interesting characters (the Sean Connery film was pretty close to this novel's storyline) and the usual deadly Apaches and ruthless gunmen out for themselves. L'Amour's novels are condensed, so don't expect a sprawling epic for the most part, just tight stories and lots of gunplay and galloping stallions and sweat.
