They are hoping for a rabbit, a deer, or even a buffalo, but they haven't managed to catch anything bigger than a rattlesnake when they see the Indian raiding party galloping over the plains. While their family's wagon train stops for a rest, Jacob Milam goes hunting with his younger brother, Tom. Jacob races back to camp, desperate to warn his parents, but it is already too late. As they come of age in an unfamiliar land, Jacob and Tom are finally reunited in an unlikely place: The killing fields of the Old West.. Rescued by a shaman, he is initiated into the mystical rites of the Blackfeet people. Torn apart by betrayal, two brothers search for each other on the Western plains.

This book is very rich and textured, making you feel like you're there with the characters. I didn't much care for the parts with Coyote Kilhenney and Tom Milam, though I know those parts were necessary for the overall cohesiveness of the story. I really loved the parts detailing Jacob Sun Gift's life and the overtone of spirituality that pervaded those scenes was pure beauty. I r. smokymtnchik said Five Stars. Best book ever! I would love to see a movie based on this book.
