I don't remember how I have learned about this one, but boy! I am glad to have found it. The author is Korean born, and came to the US as adult after the Korean War, but he wrote this book in English, which is by itself unbelievable. I have read many good books about war, so I wasn't very excited about reading another one, but this one really stood out. I read this book in the late 70s and was I read this book in the late 70s and was deeply moved by it, despite the deceptively simple writing style. It has a breath-talking honesty and ending one rarely encounters anywhere.By chance, I was describing it today to a friend who runs a foreign book store in Harvard Square, and looked it up on Amazon when I came home to be sure I had given him the correct title. (I recalled it as "The Martyrs" rather than "The Martyred"). Yet even 35 years later, I remembered the title and author accurately enough to quickly find it here. How many books can one say that about?I'm going to buy another copy and re-read it after subs. "Korean War book with universal themes" according to Andrew S.. Good book which is unfortunately not well known. I found it to be an engaging read, with a good pace and leaving you plenty to think about.
