James E. Tremlett said great first novel - worthy of Martin Cruz Smith or Alan Furst. Captain Gregor Reinhardt is not what you would call a contented man.An officer in the Abwehr, he can barely remember a time when he felt good about himself. When he was a proper policeman, back in Germany. When he was happily married to a good woman, before she died. When his estranged son still looked up to him, before he joined her in death. When he had a government he could occasionally look up to, before the Nazis ruined it.Now, posted to one of the most ethnically, religiously, and politically-divided areas in Europe -- Sarajevo, in Yugoslavia -- he spends his. Igor Dumbadze said war at its worst. Excellent book - worthy of comparison to Furst and Kerr (Bernie Guenther), although maybe a notch better than FurstA very in depth look at the horrors and brutality of war, the incredible complexity of relationships - which may have fermented for decades, if not centuries, and the unspeakable toll of all of this on humanity. Besides being a very good "mystery", the book gets the highest mark for it's depiction of war at its worst.Writing was great, characters were well developed, the plot had substance (although a few "coincidences" were a bit uncanny).Really help. Carlo Kergenmayer said Kerr is better, but still. Very similar set-up to Kerr's excellent Bernie Gunter's novels (ex-WWI hero, ex-criminal police officer who stood up against the Nazis taking over the police forces, dead wife, likes his drink a bit too much, etc.). Kerr excells in setting up all his characters. McCallin's main character is well fleshed out (but again, quite similar to Kerr's), but some of the secondary characters are too one-dimensional. The setting of McCallin's novel is quite good: the Balkans and the very intricate political goings-on (which after the fall of communism led to a violent civil w
