About the Author Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool in 1910, and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He turned to writing full time in 1959, settling on the Mediterranean island of Gozo. His lifelong love of sailing made him a capable naval officer, and he served with distinction on a series of small warships. Unputdownable! Daphne Carew The best of the best, I read this book fairly early after publication and knew I had to reread it one day when I reached pension age. I have always wanted to visit Malta but so far it's still on my bucket list. The most interesting, horrifying, wonderful history of Malta during second world . "A Great Read" according to KEITH O A JONES. a great book going back to the remote history of Malta and progressing through to modern times with a lot of relevance to WWII and Malta's turmoil during that period.
