This book did not disappoint, in fact I have read everything which comes my way set in the Western Territories during this time period, from all perspectives, the cavalry, the wagon trains, the Nez Perce to Cheyenne, Lewis and Clark, Native legends, white women to Crazy Horse and the Manitou. This book did not disappoint, in fact, it registers at the top of the heap, surpassing the trite, the judgmental, the well-known sagas and the reader senses how that time period weaves into daily lives, dreams, and the realities of the post-Civil war while the West was in tran. Bookreporter said Sparkles like a diamond. It is nice to see Lin Enger back once again. It has been six years since his debut novel, UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, was published. His new book, THE HIGH DIVIDE, is somewhat different in subject matter and setting from its predecessor. In many ways, though, it examines similar issues --- the secrets men keep, the spiritual debts they owe --- that were explored in his first novel, but from a somewhat different perspective.THE HIGH DIVIDE qualifies as a western, given its setting in the Minnesota, Dakota and Montana territories in 18. Finally, a story about the old west worth reading. WOW! From the first sentence -"that summer was cool and windless, the clouds unrelenting, as if God had reached out his hand one day and nudged the sun from its rightful place"- to the prophetic words of Magpie a plains Indian warrior -"What we did was good and what we had to do - but it didn't change things. Magpie laid a palm across his chest. "Not for me. I could see that even if I did have a son,I would have no world for him," I was hooked and in love with this book.It transports the reader to that mystical, melancholy time
