It has taken me almost two years to work up the nerve to read his long-awaited, painstakingly researched book. It is a pleasure, and a relief, to discover that "The Gates of the Alamo" fully deserves all the praise it has received.As much as the Alamo siege serves. Historical fiction at its best Harrigan's book is as good as historically based fiction can be, and that statement is meant to evoke comparisons with any of O'Brian's books. Just as O'Brian simultaneously demythologizes and humanizes the Nelson era, Harrigan does the same for an event in Texas history that has become iconic and mythical.
