His commander loved the books and asked GMF why he labled them fiction? GMF said he mumbled something about lawyers and goes on to tell all of us readers. Highly enjoyable reading. Barring the fact that these are all short stories with only the thin thread of the (sometimes nearly invisible) McAuslan holding them together, this is a delightful, rueful, humorous look at what appears to be the author's thinly-veiled experiences in the British colonial forces in the immediate post WWII period. It is, as are Fraser's "Flashman" books, NOT nostalgic in a soppy way for the heroics of anyone. But there is a quiet love and respect for the dignity and un. AMK said Rbargin, suh!. George MacDonald Fraser was an effortless writer with published work in many genres. Many know his Flashman character, but he was also responsible for moving works of reporting on the Second War in Burma, and in this instance, short stories. Although this is a doorstop of a work, it is an effortless read that also leaves a surprisingly strong impression for a good while after it is finished. While it is basically a snapshot of Scottish army life in the austerity years
