An ambious, but mis-aimed novel The Best of Our Spies, by former BBC reporter Alex Gerlis, is an ambitious novel that, unfortunately, does quite achieve its ambition. It is a complicated WWII espionage story centered around the Allies' misinformation program aimed at convincing the Germans the invasion of France would take place at the Pas de Calais rather than the beaches of Normandy.A young French woman is recruited as a spy by German intelligence and sent to England as a war refugee. A nurse, she takes a job in a military hospital where she can glean information by overhearing conversations among wounded soldiers and sailors. There she meets an injured Royal . I could not put it down, compelled as I was with finding out how RAF Lieutenant Owens and Natalie, the French nurse and Nazi spy, will play their parts in and survive WWII.I very rarely give five stars but this had all the elements I crave; characters I care about as well as some villains that blur the line of likability, a compelling plot, learning things I didn't know before, and an altogether believable drama.. That a democratic government would use one of its citizens as Quinn was used, is not believable. Further, the importance that Edgar puts in following Quinn as he searches for his wife seems illogical. The book is drawn out with vivid descriptions and is weaker than "The Swiss Spy."
