Yet Hannibal’s armies must take brutal losses as they pass through the Pyrenees mountains, forge the Rhone river, and make a winter crossing of the Alps before descending to the great tests at Cannae and Rome itself. After conquering the Roman city of Saguntum, Hannibal wages his campaign through the outposts of the empire, shrewdly befriending peoples disillusioned by Rome and, with dazzling tactics, outwitting the opponents who believe the land route he has chosen is impossible. This epic retelling of the legendary Carthaginian military leader’s assault on the Roman empire begins in Ancient Spain, where Hannibal Barca sets out with tens of thousands of soldiers and 30 elephants. David Anthony Durham draws a brilliant and complex Hannibal out of the scant historical record–sharp, sure-footed, as nimble among rivals as on the battlefield, yet one who misses his family and longs to see his son grow to manhood. Whether portraying the deliberations of a general or the calculations of a common soldier, vast multilayered scenes of battle or moments of introspection when loss seems imminent, Durham brings history alive.
Fortune's Fate Seachranaiche Make no mistake, there are issues with this book, but David Anthony Durham has done such an incredible job of bringing Hannibal and the Second Punic War to life that I rate "Pride of Carthage" five stars anyway. Hannibal's story of war, struggle, revenge, and hate is one of the most fascinating and evocative stories in human history, but Hannibal's story comes to us through only a couple of classical sources: the larger events of the period are known, but the details passed into antiquity after the Romans razed the city of Carthage and Carthage's entire culture during the Third Punic War. To know Hannibal, then, we must resort to fictio. Complete story of Hannibal's wars with Rome. bert moskowitz Very good story of Hannibal and his wars with Rome. Story line was well developed and descriptive. Some of the characters were not described or characterized in sufficient detail to get to the point where you got to really know them,. Doesn't Quite Stand Out Paul McGrath The remarkable Carthaginian general Hannibal invaded the Italian peninsula in 218 BC in order to conquer his hated enemy, Rome. This novel is a fictionalized account of that campaign, as told through the eyes of its most significant participants. The first point which needs to be made is one which states the obvious: it occurred in 218 BC. BC means, "before Christ," so, in other words, Christianity did not exist. The Jews were at this point in time an insignificant band of wanderers, so Judaism was not exactly a worldwide concept either. It would be another eight hundred years before Mohammed was born, and whatever religions that existe
Ill prepared for the frigid weather, pummeled by avalanches and harassed by Celtic tribes, the army arrives in Italy reduced to perhaps 30,000. Against all odds, Hannibal brings his soldiers through the tortuous marshes of the Arno, and traps and massacres a large Roman force at Lake Trasimene and again at Cannae. All rights reserved. Known for his novels of African-American life in 19th-century America (Gabriel's Story; Walk Through Darkness), Durham leaps continents and centuries to tell the epic story of Hannibal and his march on Rome in this heady, richly textured novel.
