From Publishers Weekly The gung-ho Marines familiar to readers of Griffin's seven Corps novels (Behind the Lines, etc.) return for an eighth adventure?and not their best. . While the plot teases with a promise of suspense in an exotic and forbidding locale, the reality is that not a shot is fired, not a cliffhanger is encountered and three-fourths of the narrative is set safely back in the States, where the characters spend most of their time drinking, womanizing, disobeying orders and wringing their hands over how they can rejoin the war. Numerous side plots provide color and historical perspective, but overwrought dialogue, flat narrative and soap-operatic storytelling leave this lengthy tale without snap. "Excellent writer of military genre" according to G. Pounds. An excellent writer dedicated to keeping history true to the facts! I thoroughly enjoyed this entire series of 7 books and couldn't put one down without having the other sitting right next to it so I could continue. Each character is well developed and when talking about ranking military leaders of the time, he kept his facts true, insightful, and historically correct. I also thought his inclusion of specifications on military weaponry helpful, and necessary in depicting military events.. Jeffrey A. Jones said Great as always. So if you are reading the series, you have gotten to know the characters as if they are your friends. The military knowledge this beyond believe. I am lucky there are two more books in the series!. Leaves you wanting to know more, hard to put down After having read all of Mr. Griffins books, this is one in a long line that gets read again and again. He has followed thru with details of the actual war and has not forgotten the characters he has created in previous books. This book like the others make one anxious for the next book in line, you really want to know how the story will end, although we all know who won the war, but the characters come alive in time and space and as usual Mr. Griffin has left the ending open as more stories can be told. An author of the very best who does not overlook any detail. For a reader of history this book or series of books
