hugh riminton said The title has become a cliche; the book is as fresh as ever. No-one seriously interested in English literature can afford not to read this book. As a central device, the parallel journey into the heart of Africa and the dark centre of the human experience, remains as powerful as ever. The writing in the opening pages, depicting the men and the Thames and the wide possibilities that rise with every outgoing tide, remain as evocative as anything in English. Conrad's subject is barbarity, a theme as relevan. Kindle Customer said This book has been hailed as one of the greatest books ever written & I would agree it is. This is of course a classic. I read it again as part of reading the Congo. Congo is a history & this is a novel. This book has been hailed as one of the greatest books ever written & I would agree it is great. What more can I say. It's all been said about this book. If you haven't read this classic then read it especially for the complexity of the characters & the follies of fools. RAG. Janet Schwartz said A classic that deserves a second look. I had to read this for high school ages ago and hated it then, but thought I would give it another try, since I liked Lord Jim. It was not at all as I remembered it and I found it an interesting character study, and it gave good insights into colonialism. It was rather enlightened for its time. Although it is slow-paced the book is short so it is not a burden to read.

"Heart of Darkness has had an influence that goes beyond the specifically literary. This parable of a man's 'heart of darkness' dramatized in the alleged 'Dark Continent' of Africa transcended its late Victorian era to acquire the stature of one of the great, if troubling, visionary works of western civilization." --Joyce Carol Oates
