That’s OK. This is freedom of spe. Ray H. said Timely Reading, Well Researched and Written.. Great book at a timely moment in this country's history. Shipler does a masterful job delineating the difference between speech rights under the first amendment with its restrictions on the government with the broader cultural environment that both demands greater freedom while also putting some categories of speech out of bounds. Recommended reading for any parent whose school district is removing books from the curriculum because of complaints from a vocal minority.. Jake said An incredible topic ruined by partisan politics. Despite the blatant partisan stance taken by the author in the first two parts of the book I continued to read until part three where the author discusses racial bigotry and the limits placed upon it with regards to freedom of speech. About halfway through, I just couldn't stand it anymore. This topic is incredibly deep and the author completely misses the mark.
