Art restorer and sometime spy Gabriel Allon is asked to visit Zurich, to clean the work of an Old Master for a millionaire banker. With the Swiss authorities trying to pin the murder on Allon and a powerful cabal determined to make sure this wartime secret remains buried, the art restorer must use all his former spy skills to find out the truth. But when he gets there he finds the corpse of his client in a pool of blood beneath the masterpiece, and discovers that a secret collection of priceless paintings - stolen by Nazis in the war - is missing. And with an assassin that he helped to train also on the loose, Allon will need all his wits just to stay alive.

The English Assassin brings back Gabriel Allon, the appealingly melancholy art restorer with a double life as an Israeli secret agent, first introduced in 2000's The Kill Artist. When Gabriel tries to leave Zurich, the Swiss police capture him immediately--and moreover, they know his real identity. Temperamental and mistrustful, she nevertheless believes Gabriel's story, and reveals that Rolfe owned a secret collection of priceless French Impressionist paintings, apparently stolen by his mur

Slow, boring, and not believable jackie777 I expected a lot more from this author based upon all the hype. Gabriel Allon is pictured as a talented art restorer and the author does a good job by getting deep into this side of his identity. But I hardly established an image of an assassin because there of lack of details about his "assassin side". And since the book is about an assassin, I felt disappointed and cheated.Speaking about Jacqueline Delacroix, my only question is: "What is this all about?" Does the author believe that the reader is so stupid and will swallow the fact that super-duper smart terrorists wouldn't recognize a super-model that looks at them from every storef. The writing itself is good, and it is an interesting exciting story, HOWEVER, the reader on the CD's is awful. He reads in a monotone, and it is impossible to distinguish between the voices of the different characters. He sounds the same for both women and men, Israelis, Germans, Swiss, and Italians. He does give one character a ridiculous Irish Brough. It is infuriating to hear him mispronounce German, French, and Italian words. It is a rare surprise when he pronounces a foreign word correctly. He should have taken the trouble to learn how to pronounce them, or not taken th. Powerful and meaningful story that transcends the genre, while still being a thrilling page turner. Anne Rice This is the sixth Gabriel Allon novel that I've read. I read two recents ones and was so impressed that I went back to the beginning and I'm now reading Allon's adventures in order. Well, I didn't think Silva could top "The Confessor," but "A Death in Vienna" does indeed top it. This novel takes on an immense theme --- the horrors of the Holocaust, and the immense debt owed to ALL its victim by ALL of us --- if we are ever to recover from the inhumanity and cruelty of the Second World War, and move on to a world in which such ghastly horrors can never again happen. And the author treats this immense theme with dignity, feeling, restrain
