Author One-on-One: James R. Today, we see the same struggles with PTSD in Iraq and Afghanistan, and lately with the proper diagnosis of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury from roadside bomb concussions.Ryan: This is book six in your Billy Boyle series. And why your brain plucks it out of the universe, and understands instantly that it’s the beginning of everything. Each book stands alone in terms of the story. Two officers from troops stationed near Naples, Italy, have been found dead. Ryan: Oh, tell me more! Benn: The fear among officers at headquarters is that a crazed killer is working on a royal flush, with a general targeted as the ace of hearts. When I was ready, it was the Boston Irish, not Sicilians, who gave birth to Billy. In the opening wedding scene, which takes place in 1945, Michael is in his Marine unifor

As the invasion at Anzio begins, Billy needs to keep a cool head amidst fear and terror as the killer calculates his next moves.. The message seems to be clear—if the murderer isn't apprehended, the higher ranks will be next.   1943: Billy Boyle is sent to Caserta, Italy, to investigate the murders of two American officers stationed there. In this mystery, Billy Boyle has to find a serial killer among the troops stationed in Caserta, Italy, in the days just before the battle of Anzio. Benn tackles the idea (as presented by one of the Army doctors) that, over prolonged exposure to combat, 98% of men will develop acute symptoms of combat fatigue (or what we would call PTSD). The other 2% would be sociopaths. At this late stage in the war, as Benn depicts it, the troops are no . I mention all this because Benn is an anomaly of sorts; the author of a series of books where the quality of writing of both plot and characters has improved steadily with each new book. When I look at other series books over time, I often have the feeling that the author has run out of things to say or has lost interest in his or her characters. Or that the writing has become almost "rote". Sometimes noted authors "coast" on their well-established series until either complete ennui h. If there is a better Murder Mystery Author alive, we don't know who he is! Wow. This is the 6th book in the Billy Boyle Series set in the European Theatre during WWII. And I have to say, the best to date. And it wasn't as if outdoing the first 5 books was any easy feat. This is a superb series, with fully fleshed out characters, wonderful plot lines, plenty of 'whodunit' in a setting many today might be unfamiliar with (Europe in WWII). Finish the last page and you're left with a.) wanting more and b.) feeling like you 'knew' the characters (my standard for character development is 'Do I feel like I knew the players, were they real enough to have been neighbors or friends?') Truthfully, I hope Benn writes 20 more Bo
